Biography

Félix Díaz (1833-1872) was a soldier born in Oaxaca and brother of General Porfirio Díaz. He studied in the Institute of Sciences and Arts, Oaxaca. He enlisted in the artillery battalion and his brother Porfirio sent him to military college. He served in the capacity of second lieutenant and was sent to Zacatecas to fight indigenous peoples. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel and in 1853 met the dictator Antonio López de Santa Anna. He fought against the revolution of Ayutla, up until August 1855. During Comonfort’s coup d’état of December 1857 he aligned himself with the conservatives up until 1860 when he moved back to Oaxaca and joined the liberals. He gathered together many of the dispersed troops of the battle of Calpulalpan (1 January 1861) and entered the city of Mexico, with the victors of this battle. He was involved in the first action against the French Intervention (1862-67) at Fortín de las Flores, Veracruz, on 19 April 1862. He was wounded and captured but managed to escape. He fought in the battle of 5 May 1862 and in 1863 fought in the siege of Puebla alongside Gónzalez Ortega. He also fought in the clashes of arms of Ayotla, August 1864, Oaxaca, October 1865 and La Carbonera. In November 1865 he attained the rank of brigadier general; and in March1866 he was involved in the taking of Chihuahua; he also took part in the action at Querétaro and entered Mexico City with his brother in 1867. When the Mexican Republic triumphed he moved back to Oaxaca and served as governor. In 1871 he rose up with the Plan of la Noria, but was defeated by General Ignacio R. Alatorre in Itundujia, and in San Mateo Sindihui in December. He was found dead in Tehuantepec in 1872.
