Marcelino Castañeda

Lifespan: (1806 – 1877)
Profession: Lawyer, Politician

Biography

Marcelino Castañeda (1806-1877) was a lawyer and politician. He was Governor of Durango from 1837 to 1839 and once again in 1847, resigning on 3 April because he was not able to abolish the federal decree to seize church property. He was also Minister of Justice (September 1847, and 7 December 1848-14 March 1849), and served as President of the Supreme Court of Justice 1847-1848, resigning after the government refused him special powers to combat indigenous unrest. Castañeda was Deputy to the 1856-57 Constituent Congress and was one of the most prominent major figures of the Conservative party.
