José María Cano

Biography

José María Cano (1787-1848) was a doctor who was born and died in Guadalajara, (Jalisco). He studied in the old university of Guadalajara where he gained his title as solicitor in November 1815 and that of doctor one month later. He specialised in surgery and was the first to do so in his birth city. In a modern climate of scientific discovery he practiced operations employing his own unique and innovative style. In 1839 when Caro reorganised the faculty of Medicine in Guadalajara, he created a new plan for teaching and took up the post of professor of physiology, hygiene and legal medicine. Two years before his death, his portrait was painted by the noteworthy painter José Maria Estrada the original portrait is currently located in Guadalajara state museum.
