Biography

Antonio Canales (1800?-1852?) was a lawyer born in Monterrey. A political soldier who fought on the federalist side, in 1839 he achieved the rank of colonel and was stationed in Monterrey. He fought against the Texan independent government in a number of campaigns in the early 1840s, notoriously capturing 242 Texan troops in December 1842, including Commander General William S. Fisher and the generals Green and Murray. In 1846 and 1847 he fought against the invading U.S. army with guerilla forces. He was governor of Tamaulipas in 1851.
