Biography

Juan de Dios Cosgaya y Rubio (1777-1844) was born in Mérida, Yucatán. He joined the seminary of San Idelfonso in this city on attaining a scholarship in 1793. He then moved on to Campeche to pursue nautical studies. Following graduation he joined the navy as a captain on a ship that operated for various years in the Gulf of Mexico. Thereafter, he left the navy and settled in Mérida where he was designated as a member of the battalion ‘Distinguidos Patricios’. He reached the rank of sub delegate of administration for the Camino Real highway, serving between 1808 and 1813. Under his administration he became renowned for his efforts to assist those regions that were particularly badly hit by a scarcity of maize and other products. Aware of various aspects of medicine, he also is remembered for having helped to combat certain epidemics. Cosgaya y Rubio was a dedicated defender of indigenous rights. He also supported freedom of the press and wrote for publications such as El Cometa which he founded and El Yucateco. He was governor of Yucatán in 1834 and in 1840. He died in 1844.
