José María Cobos

Profession: Regular Army Officer

Biography

José María Cobos (1826-1863) was a soldier who was born in Santander, Spain. He moved to Mexico when he was still a child. He fought on the side of the conservatives in the war of la Reforma, in which he became notorious for his cruelty, following the atrocities he committed in Coahuila, San Luis Potosí, Zacatepec and Durango. Upon the triumph of the liberal cause he moved to the United States of America. In 1863, he was in Brownsville, where he was invited to return to Matamoros to pronounce with General Juan N. Cortina, against Ma¬nuel Ruiz, governor of Tamaulipas. Cobos accepted but when he pronounced, he did so against Juárez. As a consequence, he was pursued and shot in Matamoros.
