Gerónimo Calatayud

Biography

Gerónimo Calatayud (1806-1860) was a soldier in the Three Years War

(1858-60). Who fought alongside the conservative general Miguel Miramón in the South of Jalisco and in Colima. During this war he took part in the battle of San Joaquín. After this he stayed with the army in Colima up until 1859 when the conservatives fell. He came back in December of the same year and fought in La Albarradita. Calatayud triumphed in this battle and they named him Chief Military Officer of Colima up until 24 March 1860 when the liberals were ousted. He set off for the coast and reached Cantón de Tej which was occupied at the time. On 7 May he was attacked in Santiago Ixcuintla by the liberal forces of Rojas and Corona. He fought the fleeing Indians of Lozada up until he ran out of ammunition and Calatayud took his own life in order not to fall into the hands of Antonio Rojas.
