Profession: Regular army officer

Biography

Felipe Codallos (1790-1849) was soldier who was born in Trinidad. He joined the army in February 1801, as a cadet, in Campeche and moved up through the whole military hierarchy on account of his own military merits in times of war. Codallos fought in the service of the vice-regal government throughout the struggle for Independence and on 21 February 1821 he was amongst the first troops to join the Army of the Three Guarantees. Following independence, and with present-day Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica being part of the Mexican Empire (1821-1823) he made his way to Guatemala with the expedition of General Vicente Filisola. Codallos was commissioned as the commander general and political chief of the province of San Salvador. In 1824 he was appointed commander general of Querétaro as well as quartermaster. In subsequent years he also served as commander general of Yucatán, Mexico City, San Luis Potosí and Puebla. Codallos reached the rank of major general in 1838. Codallos died in Mexico City.
