Biography

Rafael Carrillo (1822-1877) was a lawyer born in Zinapecuaro, Michoacán. He became a teacher in the College of San Nicolás when it was reopened by Melchor Ocampo. The College was founded by Vasco de Quiroga in Patzcuaro in the 16th century. Miguel Hidalgo was dean of this college and José María Morelos y Pavón one of its most outstanding pupils. Carrillo espoused liberal ideas and was congress deputy. Carrillo was a supporter Michoacán Governor Epitacio Huerta. He fought against the second Mexican Empire. He was chosen as Constitutional Governor of Michoacán in 1871. On 16 September 1875 he newly took office in the Government that he had left during the uprising of Tuxtepec, due to his loyalty to President Lerdo de Tejada. It is notable that he was an advocate of public education and he inaugurated the public State Library. Carrillo died in Morelia, Michoacán.
