Miguel Barbachano

Biography

Miguel Barbachano (1807-1859) was born in Campeche (Yucatán). He was governor of this state 1844 -1846 and 1847-1853, during the Caste Wars, in which he fought against the so-called ‘rebel Indians’. Barbachano was also known as a powerful orator. In 1859 his life ended in the city of Mérida. In 1869 he was posthumously awarded the title ‘Benemérito del Estado’ an honour given to esteemed notables of the state.
