José María Blancarte

Lifespan: (1811 – 1858)

Biography

José María Blancarte (1811-1858) was born in La Barca, Jalisco. He was a soldier involved in the military campaign of 1846-47. In 1855 he recognized the Plan of Ayutla. He was Chief Military officer of Baja California. Blancarte was put on trial in 1857 for abandoning this military zone and attempting an overthrow of power. Anastasio Parrodi, Governor of Jalisco, sent soldiers in pursuit of Blancarte and sent him to Mexico City without escort. In January 1858 Zuloaga, in control of Mexico City, incorporated him into the Miramón’s forces, who were on their way to Jalisco. During the conservative army’s occupation of Guadalajara, Blancarte proved himself an effective military chief before the siege of Santos Degollado (September 1858). When the liberals took over Guadalajara on 28 October 1858 Blancarte was killed in his house by guerilla fighter Antonio Rojas.
