Manuel Barbachano

Biography

Manuel Barbachano (1806-1864) was a poet born in the city of Puerto de Campeche (Yucatán). His Spanish father returned to Spain in 1821 with his wife doña María Josefa Tarrazo and his sons Manuel and Miguel. Manuel undertook his studies in Spain and stayed on there for a number of years, until 1837 on the death of his father when he returned with his family to Yucatán. Manuel Barbachano became known as a “costumbrista” writer and satirist. He wrote under the pen-name of ‘Don Gil de las Calzas Verdes’ and ‘Arach Noab’. His poetry was published posthumously in a number of editions of the magazine El Salón Literario.
