Biography

José Ignacio Basadre (1799-1865) was a soldier born in Veracruz. In 1817 he became a cadet in the Dragoons of New Galicia. In March 1821 he joined the Army of the Three Guarantees. He was charged with ensuring Francisco Novella signed the armistice which led to the capitulation of Mexico City in September that year. He supported the Plan of Casa Mata. He also acted as secretary of the Mexican legation in Colombia, and was commissioned to notify the English admiralty in Jamaica of the Spanish blockade of San Juan de Ulúa. He fought as a soldier in the battle of Tulancingo of January 1828 and was commander general in Veracruz and Major Officer of War. Basadre became secretary to congress in 1828 and was secretary to Santa Anna in 1832. He was entrusted with drafting the Treaty of Zavaleta that brought the 1832 Civil War to an end. He was also senator in 1832 and was approached by the United States of America to attempt to bring about the liberation of Cuba. He became minister plenipotentiary in Prussia in 1833 and a member of the junta of Military Order. From 21 November to 6 December 1844, Basadre acted as war minister. He also fought in the Mexican-American War in 1847. Basadre was promoted to division general in 1847. His life ended in Mexico City in 1865.
