Lino José Alcorta

Biography

Lino José Alcorta (1787?-1854) was born in Veracruz (Veracruz) and died in Mexico City. He began his military career as a cadet in the Cazadores de América in 1813. He participated in the campaign to repulse Isidro Barradas’ expedition and took part in the attack on Tampico and the Fortress of la Barra (August-September 1829). He was made Brigadier General in 1832. In 1840 he was wounded defending President Anastasio Bustamante during the pronunciamiento of 15 July 1840, against the rebel forces of José Urrea and Valentín Gómez Farías when they seized the National Palace, and temporarily made the president their prisoner. He also took an active role in combating the rebel forces during the Polkos Rebellion of February-March 1847, and fought in the battle of Cerro Gordo against the invading U.S. army on 18-19 April 1847. Santa Anna named him Minister of War (23 May-16 September, 1847). He also served as deputy (1850), magistrate of the Supreme Tribunal of the Ministry of War, and commander general of Sinaloa. He published a project aimed at reforming the army and a historical treatise on the infantry corps in 1841.
