Biography

Juan Bautista Alvarado (1809-1882) was a governor in the Northern Territory of Baja California (1836-1838) and in the Port of Monterrey in Alta California. Along with José Castro he led the rebellion which brought down Governor Gutiérrez in November 1836. Alvarado was a colonel in the Mexican army in 1842 and he rejoined forces with José Castro to spearhead the uprising against Governor Manuel Micheltorena (1844-1845). He was elected deputy to the national Congress in 1848. However, for economic reasons he was unable to move Mexico City to take up his parliamentary seat.
