Biography

Juan Pablo Anaya (1785-1850) was an insurgent born in Lagos, Jalisco. He joined Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla on his entry into Gualalajara. Anaya also fought in the battle of Puente de Calderón and marched in the retreat to the North where he escaped from harm. He seconded the 1821 Plan of Iguala. By 1823 he had reached the rank of Brigadier General. He was promoted to General of Division under the presidency of Manuel Gómez Pedraza and was also employed as his Minister of War (8-30 January 1833). Anaya was Governor of Tabasco from 17 November 1840 to the 6 of December of the same year. He also served as senator. He died in Mexico City, a victim of cholera morbus.
