Higinio Aguilar

Lifespan: (1836 – 1924)
Profession: Regular Army Officer

Biography

Higinio Aguilar (1836-1924). Joined the liberal army in 1861 and achieved the rank of Colonel in the Federal Army on graduating in 1914 and General in other revolutionary armies. He was licensed from this time to command forces independently and at times under the orders of generals Peláez, Alemán or Félix Díaz in Veracruz, Puebla, Hidalgo and Oaxaca. Fighting against the maderista movement in 1912 he stirred up a revolt against the government of Francisco I. Madero.

Aguilar took an active role in the constitutionalist movement as a member of the Federal Army of José Victoriano Huerta Márquez. When this army dissolved in August 1914 with the Treaties of Teoloyucan he switched loyalties. At first seeming to ally himself to Zapatismo he was later rejected and ended up fighting alongside the Oaxacan struggle for sovereignty and then with Félix Díaz in Veracruz and Puebla. He recognized the Plan of Agua Prieta and held a post in the administration of Álvaro Obregón. Aguilar died in Mexico City in 1924.
