Bruno Aguilar

Biography

Bruno Aguilar (1810-1876) was a soldier born in Guadalajara (Jalisco). He left Mexico to become educated in Europe where he stayed between 1834 and 1841, and studied at the Politécnica de Minas and at the Casa de Moneda in Paris. Aguilar visited Belgium, England and Germany where he became acquainted with Alexander von Humboldt. He was involved in the manufacture of artillery in Prussia, Saxony and Wittenberg. After his return to Mexico he was director of the foundry of cannons in Chapultepec in 1846. Partisan of the Empire he helped in the Maximilian campaigns. He was Director General of Artillery in 1867. When he retired from the army, Aguilar was involved with mining in the States of Mexico, Michoacán and Guererro. His publications include: Instrucción del artillero (1844), and Táctica de artillería de montaña (1854). He was a member of ‘Commission Scientifique du Mexique’.
