Lucas Alamán

Lifespan: (1792 – 1853)
Profession: Writer and politician
Place of birth: Guanajuato

Biography

Born in Guanajuato into a silver-mining family. Witnessed Hidalgo's occupation of Guanajuato in September 1810. Spent most of the War of Independence travelling in Europe. Deputy to Spanish Cortes, 1820-21. Minister of Relations, 1823-1825, 1830-1832, 20 April-1 June 1853. General Anastasio Bustamante's 1830-1832 government is known as the Alamán Administration owing to the influence he had on the government, during which he organised the Banco de Avío (1830). However, also under Bustamante, Alamán was considered to be responsible for Guerrero's execution (14 February 1831), an allegation that, as yet unproven, nevertheless damaged his political career almost irreparably thereafter. Founder of the Conservative Party in 1849. Editor of EL TIEMPO (1846) and EL UNIVERSAL (1848-1853). Author of DISERTACIONES (1846) and HISTORIA DE MÉJICO, 5 vols. (1849-1853).
