Miguel Urrea y Rojo

Lifespan: (1801 – 1876)
Profession: Regular Army Officer

Biography

Miguel Urrea (1801-1876) was born in Culiacan (Sinaloa). Up until 1830 he set down roots in Alamos, Sonora. In 1838 he backed the federalists of General José Urrea. In 1845 he acquired the mines of Palmarejo and applied himself to mining and he was a benefactor of the poor. In 1851 he was Chief Political Officer of the Canton of Matamoros, Chihuahua, where he was pursued by thieves. He formed a statistical record of this Canton, which was published in the Bulletin of the Society of Geography and Statistics. He was a liberal and was vice-governor of Sonora in 1857 and in 1858 he declined the governorship for political reasons. In 1860 he gave in to this and in 1864 was offered arms and supplies to fight against the French. He was the military commander of this canton and he organized the republican troops that contributed to the recuperation of Alamos in August 1866. He came into conflict with the Sonoran authorities for not granting guarantees in the mining funds. He settled in Alamos, and continued with his philanthropic acts until he died.
