Pascual Almazán

Pascual Almazán (1813 -1886) a lawyer, politician and writer born in Mexico City. The son of José María Almazán and María Josefa Rojas. He was a friend of José María Lafragua’s as they both studied at the College Carolino of Puebla where he qualified as a lawyer in 1835. Following this he undertook studies in natural science and judiciary practice and became a judge at Acatlán, at Tepeji de la Seda and of the city of Tehuacán. In 1847 he served as deputy. He also served in the state government of Pue¬bla in 1856 and in 1858 was Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Public Works. He was also State Advisor during the Empire of Maximilian. Due to the change of government he suffered persecutions and exile. At the fall of the empire Almazán was confined to Puebla where he was sent to be manager of a railway station. In 1865 he published his three volume work Roads, Railways and Canals (Caminos, ferrocarriles y canales) and for several years this was used as a text in the National School of Mining and Engineering and which was published under his pen name "Natal del Pomar". In 1874 in Puebla he published his poem in verse entitled Estifelio (for Michael Stifel, a mathematician). He was the author of one novel: A Heretic and a Muslim (Un hereje y un musulmán) (1870), which was reprinted by the College of Mexican Writers.
