Biography

Juan Pablo Anaya was born in Lagos (Jalisco) in 1785 and joined the insurgency in 1810 following Miguel Hidalgo's capture of Guadalajara at the beginning of the War of Independence (1810-1821). He fought in the Battle of Calderon and managed to avoid being taken prisoner by the Royalists, going into hiding until the Plan of Iguala was launched on 24 February 1821. He seconded the plan and was integrated into the Army of the Three Guaranatees becoming a well-known high ranking officer in the regular army. In 1823 he was promoted to Brigadier General by Manuel Gomez Pedraza and placed in command of a division. He served briefly as Minister of War (8-30 January 1830) and was Governor of Tabasco (17 November to 6 December 1840). He also served as senator. He died in Mexico City in 1850, having fallen ill with cholera morbus.
