Benito Quijano

Lifespan: (1800 – 1865)

Benito Quijano (1800-1865) was a cadet in the active battalion of Mérida in the Spanish army. He was a supporter of the Plan of Iguala. Subsequently he backed the Plan of Casa Mata. He was also the assistant to the governor of Veracruz in 1823 and to the state commander in 1827. He participated in the defense of the port of Veracruz during the invasion of Barradas in 1829. Quijano was commander general of Tamaulipas, Veracruz and the state of Mexico at different junctures of his career. He was famous for being an efficient administrator and astute politician. He fought under the orders of Santa Anna and of Anastasio Bustamente. In 1848 he was commissioned by Ignacio Mora y Villamil to participate in the peace negotiations that brought the Mexican-American War (1846-48) to an end. He was a congressional deputy in 1857 and opposed the Félix Zuloaga’s reformed Plan of Tacubaya of January 1858. He fought with the liberals in the War of the Reforma (1858-1861) and, as general of the cavalry brigade, took part in the battle of Calpulalpan against Miguel Miramón in 1860. Quijano was a personal friend of Benito Juárez who named him governor of Yucatán on 15 December 1863. During the French Intervention Quijano moved to New York where he founded the Mexican Club ‘Club Mexicano’ of which he was the president and undertook intensive work in support of president Juárez. Quijano died in New York in 1865.
