Biography

Luis de Cortázar (17?-?) was born in Celaya (Guanajuato). He fought as a royalist but when Iturbide announced the Plan de Iguala it was Cortázar who proclaimed independence in los Amoles (Jalisco) on 16 March 1821 in front of guards of his regiment. The following day he entered Salvatierra (Guanajuato) backed by the army despite the royalist opposition of Lieutenant Colonel Reguera.
