Introduction
John Millar was a Scottish philosopher, historian and Regius Professor of Civil Law at the University of Glasgow from 1761 to 1800.
The original three-volume manuscript is dated 1787-88, but contains a copy of the printed syllabus dated 1792. The manuscript contains an autographed note by James Millar, the son of John Millar, transmitting them to the Duke of Hamilton, whose signed note is in each volume and reads: “Given to me by Prof. Millar. N.B. To be taken care of – H. & B.” Volume 1 contains a further note that reads: “The original lectures of James Millar given to me by his son. Highly valuable and to be taken great care of. H. & B. Hamilton Palace 1833."
The manuscript was possibly authored by the eldest son of John Millar, who was also named John.
