Title
N. T. Phillipson
Subject
This collection includes Phillipson's notes and papers from his university studies at Aberdeen and Cambridge, as well as a small number of notes and lectures from his national service teaching GCE courses at RAF Coltishall. It further includes extensive research notes taken from manuscript materials relating to Phillipson's research interests in the Scottish Enlightenment, as well as notes and copies taken from academic works relating to these themes. There are also many drafts for papers to be given at conferences and seminars, as well as other ephemera relating to these conferences; in some cases, this includes copies of papers presented by other delegates at such conferences. There are a series of files regarding the series of Science of Man colloquia co-directed by Phillipson, including his notes of welcome, informal notes on papers presented and, in some cases, formal notes of response to discussion topics. Further, the collection includes research and draft material in preparation for the publication of Phillipson's main works on David Hume, Adam Smith, Edinburgh city, the University of Edinburgh, and the Scottish Enlightenment more broadly; as Phillipson continued to write and research on similar themes throughout his career, he often re-used research notes and draft material from previous projects. Many notes and drafts are annotated by Phillipson with instructions on his intention to re-use these drafts, as well as queries to himself on proposed amendments or issues he identifies in his draft work. There are several files of material relating to Phillipson's teaching and a series of lectures given to students at the University of Edinburgh, as well as papers relating to his supervision and examination of postgraduate research. There is a small amount of material relating to Phillipson's teaching with the Open University. A couple of items speak to Phillipson's role on the board of the Edinburgh International Festival, including one set of minutes, and several drafts of papers given at the festival by Phillipson.
