SETON, WALTER [SSNE 8529]
Text source
Lieutenant Walter Seton was an officer in the cavalry cornet of Captain George Seton [SSNE 8528]. He was involved, along with Captain Seton, Captain Rowland Yorke, and Burgomaster of Ghent Jan van Hembize in attempting to betray Dendermonde to the Prince of Parma. The plot was discovered by Francois de Rhyhove, and Lieutenant Seton was imprisoned and tortured on the rack to exact a confession. He was hanged, beheaded and quartered. His head was displayed on a spike on the Quentkins Bulwark (the gate he intended to open to Parma) while the quarters were hung at each of the city gates. Rhyhove informed the States-General of the condemnation for treason and the States-General published the condemnation on 31 March 1584.
