John Hay, a Scotsman, was sent to Sweden by Sir James Spens [SSNE 1642] in April 1627 with a commission as a ship captain. He was accompanied by five other Scottish gunners whom Spens told Gustav II Adolf that they could also all skipper ships should the need arise. These recruited officers allsought suitable pay to bring their wives to Sweden with them.
