STUART, WILLIAM [SSNE 8214]
Text source
Ensign William Stuart served in the company of Captain David Ramsay in the Scots-Dutch Brigade. Around 1607 he killed a "cousin-german, and a near blood relative" of the captain, perhaps in a duel. Captain Ramsay requested that the Council of State remove Ensign Stuart from his company, citing that it would be "more difficult... to have him serve in my company without loss of respect... [and would] be most advisable for securing quiet, peace, and tranquility to both parties." Furthermore, Ramsay request that "the said ensign [keep] himself anywhere else out of my sight."
