James Cheyne was one of the original captains of Colonel Buccleuch’s [SSNE 5010] regiment in the Scots-Dutch brigade. He took oath on 17 April 1604 and is noted as being from “Steelberg” and is also mentioned by Ferguson as “Baron de Chinne.” His arrival in Ostend with his company is apparently mentioned by one Fleming. Initially he was to command to 200 men with a salary of £2489 but later on in 1604 the command dropped to 150 men, £2738. He was succeeded by Arthur Forbes on 14 January 1605. More research should be done on Cheyne, as he appears to have been someone of importance.
