Captain Thomas Edmond was the son of Colonel Sir William Edmond [SSNE 8019]. After the death of his father in 1606, he, his mother (Agneta Berck), and his sister, (Gertrude Edmond [SSNE 8039]) were recommended by King James VI and I. Thomas Edmond receieved a commission as captain on 16 January 1617 to Lieutenant-Colonel James Caddel's [SSNE 8005] (deceased) company. Edmond served as infantry captain until 11 August 1625, when he was commissioned as a captain of cavalry. Command of his infantry company fell to Captain William Drummond.

During his tenure as infantry captain, the strength and salary of his company fluctuated.

1617: 70 Men, £1059

1618: Same (full strength should have been 120 men, £1655)

In 1622 Edmond requested to augment his company to 150 men. Evidently, while on a recruiting trip in Scotland, he raised 80 men (30 more than was intended). Out of his own pocket he fed, clothed, and armed the soldiers but the Council of State ordered him to reduce his company to 120 men, as 150 was simply too expensive and the council would not reimburse him. Edmond's request was not objected to by the provinces of Holland and West Friesland due to "the good qualities of the captain," (Ferguson, 339), although they desired compensation by the Council of State.

In 1625 there were apprently 22 sick men in his company.

Because it is unknown whether his mother was Scottish or Dutch, it is possible that he was half Scottish and half Dutch.
