John Barentss was a Scottish musketeer serving under Captain Dirck Vijgh. He named cobbler Jacob Janss his heir, who was living with his wife Neeltge Davitsdr in Princenhof near the College of the Admiralty. Barentss indicated in his will that he had lived with the couple for nearly 15 years.
