William Anderson was admitted a burgess of Malmo as a tailor in 1569. He sold cloth for the army's use in the Nordic Seven Year war 1563-70. During this time (1577-93) he also traded in corn and salt; he also traded at Aalborg in 1589, where he had a stall at the Whitsun fair in 1592. He exported corn and malt from Malmo 1606, and sent a small quantity of Rye to Copenhagen 1611. His mercantile activity extended to the Netherlands as in 1611 he imported cloth from Amsterdam. He played a role in the local administration, serving as a Councillor by 1599, and also as one of the town's representatives at the acclamation of Prince Christian in 1608. Anderson was also engaged in real estate, buying and selling land in 1572, 1575, 1582-3, 1591-2. He owned land himself by 1608, for which Claus Machabeus, q.v., was his tenant. However his financial circumstances appear not to have been totally straightforward as he borrowed money from the mayor of Helsingborg William Williamson, from whom Thomas Jacobsen Glegg of Helsingborg inherited Anderson's obligation and claimed payment from Anderson's son William in 1627. He was active in the local religious life, acquiring seats at St. Peter's 1572-3. He was also in charge of the liquidation of the late Peter Laurentz's estate in 1584 (assessed at 5471/2 mk.) Married Karine, who 1578 was one of the assessors of the late councillor Mickel Madsen's estate.
