William Grison settled as a merchant in Hamburg in the early 1640s where he paid taxes as a foreigner in 1641. On 31 October the same year he married in the German-Reformed church in Altona. The registrar noted that Grison originated from Veere, the Scottish staple in the Netherlands. Grison traded with Scotland, England, the Netherlands as well as the Iberian Peninsula. In addition, he tried to break into the transatlantic trade with the Caribbean from the early 1650s.
