GUTHRIE, NICHOLAS [SSNE 7021]

Nicholas Guthrie was the son of Walter [SSNE 6446] and the brother of George [SSNE 6271]. Nicholas was born in Sweden where he worked as a painter until his brother George was ennobled. He was then unable to practise as a painter as it was deemed unsuitable for a gentleman. Nicholas then travelled to England but had little luck there. On 30 October 1684 he was at Dundee where he was en route to Montrose where his father had been born.
