Text source

William Paterson served as a soldier in the service of Poland-Lithuania around the town of Slutsak/Sluck (now in Belarus). In 1653 Paterson issued a set of instructions to the city garrison which still survive. The following year he built an impressive castle near the city and in a remarkably short time (2 April to 10 August 1654). He may have remained in Polish-Lithuanian service through out the war with Russia, 1654-1667. However, when Lithuania left the Commonwealth in 1655 after the Treaty of Kedany, Paterson would technically have been in Swedish service for about a year as he worked for Bouslaw Radziwill. Paterson may be the same man as either [SSNE 5690] or [SSNE 5717]
