John Metcalf was an English nobleman who volunteered for Swedish service in 1659. On 3 May that year Bengt Skytte [SSNE 4842], then residing in London, wrote a commendation for Metcalf to King Karl X noting his naval experience, although he had never held a commission. Metcalf was taking two other volunteers with him to Sweden and was motivated partly by his own desire to serve, but also through Skytte's encouragement
