John Metcalf was an English nobleman who volunteered for Swedish service in 1659. On 3 May that year Bengt Skytte [SSNE 4842], then residing in London, wrote a commendation for Metcalf to King Karl X noting his naval experience, although he had never held a commission. Metcalf was taking two other volunteers with him to Sweden and was motivated partly by his own desire to serve, but also through Skytte's encouragementSwedish Riksarkiv, Anglica II, vol.32, Riksradet Bengt Skyttes bref till Kongl Majt.
