Benedictus Cunningham was a Scot born in Germany, the son of Adam Cunningham [SSNE 2110]. His father had served as a captain of Scottish infantry in Stralsund, then he became captain in Alexander Leslie's recruited regiment, and later a captain in Gerdt Weissmeyer's recruited squadron. He eventually served as a lieutenant-colonel. Adam Cunningham had two sons, Adam [SSNE 2112] and this man, Benedictus. In 1662 his brother Adam was granted a birthbrievE from the Privy Council of Scotland noting his noble Scottish origins, which had been vouched for by his noble friends of the House of Cunningham. Benedictus was also granted a birthbrieve in June 1664. It was most probably this man who, under the name Bendix von Kuningham served as Hofmarskal (Court Marshall) in Plön near Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein in 1682. That year a payment was made to him for 120 rixdaler from Christian V of Denmark-NorwayRegister of the Privy Council of Scotland, 3rd series, I, 1661-1664, pp.257 and 542, 4 September 1662 and 9 June 1664; E.
