Robert Hay served in the Danish-Norwegian army in colonel Donald Mackay's [SSNE 93] regiment, but received his reckoning by 28 September 1628. He had been garrisoned at at Stade until the town's fall April 1628. On leaving Denmark, Hay transferred over to Swedish service as many of his fellow officers did. There he served first as an ensign in John Meldrom's [SSNE 572] regiment, then in 1630 he was promoted to lieutenant in William Baillie's [SSNE 1909] regiment.
