Hugh Spottiswoode was the younger son of Spottiswoode of Darsie, himself a son of John Spottiswoode, Archbishop of St Andrews. Hugh served in the British regiment of Vere under Count Mansfeld in 1620. He thereafter joined the Swedish army of Gustav Adolf. By the 1640s he served as a Captain in the army of Charles I. He was eventually killed at Drogheda by one of Cromwell's soldiers apparently after being given quarter.
