He had a sister, Christina [SSNE 6875] and was also brother to Anders [SSNE 714] and George [SSNE 4814]. Despite this, he does not appear in Svenska Adelns Ättartavlor, VIII, p.371 along with the rest of his family (nor does another brother, Henrik [SSNE 6107]. John Spalding moved to Stockholm at a young age and became a burgess there in 1703 and was considered one of the town's most prosperous merchants ("krämhandlare"). He enjoyed the respect of his fellow merchants and in 1713 he led the burgess commission that dealt with Karl XII's war taxes. In 1714 his brother in law, Charles Brander, sent him 100 riksdaler from London, but when he tried to get it exchanged a Mr Blackstaden's would not honour it. Spalding wrote Countess Eva Magdalena Oxenstierna requesting her to authorise the transaction. Spalding was chosen in 1719 to lead the Burgess Estate with "Frihetstidens" [the post Karl XII period] first parliament where he played a particularly important role. In 1725 Spalding owned a part of the manufacturing works in Alingsås.
