John Lowrie was, according to some sources, born in 1574 in Scotland, the son of a priest. He entered military service in Sweden around 1610. In 1623 he became a lieutenant in a Kronoberg regiment under Thomas Muschamp [SSNE 3168], and a captain there by 1629. Lowrie continued to serve in a different Kronoberg regiment and was raised to the rank of major in 1637, possibly therefore serving at the Battle of Wittstock in 1636. On 19 March 1639 he moved to Erik Stenbock's regiment with the rank of major although the Krigsarkiv, muster rolls suggest that he remained in the same regiment. In any case, Lowrie left military service in 1640 due to his great age and was rewarded with money and land. In 1647 Lowrie was ennobled and introduced in 1649 with the name of Lagergren. Lowrie was noted for his absence from the 1660 Riksdag (diet), again due to his age. He died in 1673. He was married to Valborg Larsdotter and Brita Rosenbielke and through them had two sons, one of whom died in the field in 1640. The other, Alexander Lagergren became commandant of kalmar in 1674 and Kristanopel in 1677. According to Svenska Adelns Attartavlor, this family were not Scots!Swedish Krigsarkiv, Muster Roll Thomas Muschamps 1626-1629, and Muster Roll Kronoberg's regiment 1630-1640; A letter exists in 'Krigskollegium Kancelliet; Adressatregistratur till Krigskollegiets Registratur 1631-1654' granting Lowrie "fullmakt på majorskap under Gustav Stenbocks reg Smålands knektar 7/3 1638"; G.
