In the DNB, Essex is listed as a soldier in the king's army in 1643. In 1660 he became lord-lieutenant of Hertfordshire. In 1667 he travelled in France returning the following year to become lord-lieutenant of Wiltshire. In 1670 he served as an envoy to Denmark. In the Historical Manuscripts Commission 27:12th Report, there exists an undated description of how Essex refused to salute Kronborg and the subsequent difficulties which arose from this. In the Hertfordshire County Record Office one can find letters received by him between 1670-2 whilst he was envoy to Denmark. In 1672 Essex became lord-lieutenant of Ireland.

Historical Manuscripts Commission 27:12th R:Beaufort, pp.45-6. Copies of diplomatic communications from Sir John Trevor, Secretary of State, dated 6,13,16,19,24 of May and 1 June survive.
