Hercules Beaton was the son of Ludvig Bethun of Balfour, a governor in Scotland. He was born in Fife and became chancellor to King Charles 1. He moved to Sweden after the overthrow of Charles 1 and became a major in the Västgöta cavalry. He married Anna Joung, daughter of the director for glasswork in Stockholm, Melker Joung. His son, Paul [SSNE 1797], and grandsons Paul [SSNE 1798] and Hercules [SSNE 4342] were also in Swedish service.
