ELPHINSTONE, GABRIEL [SSNE 3869]
Text source
Gabriel Elphinstone was the "Valiant Scottish captaine" who served in Denmark, and Sweden, and took part in an expedition in search of a northeast passage to China. He was captured in Siberia by Tartars and escaped to Moscow, around 1581-5. He joined the Tsar's army and is probably the same as the Scot Gabriel (died circa 1605) captain of the guard and physician to Tsar Boris Godunov.D.
