In 1678 John Chambers was master of horse, wounded at Chigirin. Then one of the principal military advisors to the young Tsar Peter and first colonel of Semionovsky Guards which he commanded in Azov expeditions and the great Northern War. In 1701 he was major- general, took part in the first Russian victory over the Swedes at Orestfer. In 1704 he was prominent at the capture of Narva, made lieutenant-general and knight of St.Andrew. In 1708 he was dismissed after the Russian defeat at Golovchin, but a Major Chambers (apparently his son) was wounded at Poltava in 1709
