Robert Sterling served in the Swedish army from 1630 to 1638. He was first in Goran Johansson Ekeblad's Vastergotland regiment in 1630. He was then a reformed ensign with James Seaton's [SSNE 3476]/George Cunningham's [SSNE 2118] recruited infantry regiment inn 1631. He was an ensign in George Cunningham's recruited regiment in 1632. He was an ensign in Robert Cunningham's [SSNE 2132] recruited regiment in 1632 and a lieutenant by 1637. He would have served in this rank at the Battle of Wittstock in 1636. It was either he or another of the same name who served as an ensign in Alexander Gordon's [SSNE 2499] dragoon regiment in 1637 and then in Francis Sinclair's [SSNE 3504] regiment in 1638Swedish Krigsarkiv, Muster Roll, 1630/2 1631/12-19; 1632/18-21; 1633/11-22; 1634/12-16,21-23; 1635/20-26,29-31; 1637/13-17; 1638/21.
