YOUNG, GILBERT [SSNE 353]
Text source
Gilbert Young entered Danish-Norwegian service sometime before 1570 as on 4 November 1571 he desired to return to Scotland. King Frederick II then recommended him to James VI after his good service since 1568. During October 1574, Young was in Scotland. However this must only have been a temporary visit as Young held several naval commands in Danish service between 1571-87, mainly in the Baltic or off the coast of Norway. He lent 65 daler to Thomas Buchanan [SSNE 1481], Scottish envoy to Denmark May 1571 (still not repaid Oct. 1574). Young was buried on 25 August 1591 in Malmø. He had one son by his first marriage- Andrew - although Young's wives names do not seem to be knownT.
