Text source
Hugh Hamilton served first as an ensign in the Scottish Stralsund infantry in 1629. With the same rank he joined Alexander Leslie's [SSNE 1] recruited regiment in 1630 but was reformed the same year. Hamilton later joined John Ruthven's [SSNE] recruited regiment in 1631 where he was confirmed with the rank of ensign in 1632. He entered William Bellenden's [SSNE 1969] regiment with that rank the same year. Part of this regiment participated at the battle of Lutzen in 1632 under the command of Ludovick Leslie. Cf.
