Alexander Bruce served first in Alexander Hamilton's [SSNE 380] regiment, then in John Hamilton's [SSNE 2595] regiment from 1629-1632. This regiment was taken over by Ludovick Leslie [SSNE 396] and served at the battle of Lutzen

NRS RD 1/404 fol. 139 " I David Thomsone, Tailyour in Newbigging be the tenor heirof binds & obleiss me to meit Donald Campbell leiutennent to Captane Bruce in the toune of Cupar in Angus upon the aucht day of September nixtcumin to the effect I may goe wt him to the warres of Suaden according to my appointment wt him qruppon I hawe ressavit his money. And gif the said Donald com not to Cupar the forsd day in tht cais I obleis me to come to the toune of Linlithgow
…the said Donald contenting and paying to me befoir I enter his service the sowme of ffourtie poundis money….. [Himself or John Thomson his brother and cautioner to repay this if David failed to show up.] At Cupar, the allevint day of August Im VIc tuentie sevin yeiris befoir thir witness[e]s, George Campbell in Cupar, Mr Wm Jack Scolm[aste]r th[e]r, Donald Campbell Student th[e]r & Walter Ramsay notar, writer heirof… [Registered in the books of Council and session 22 January 1628]"
